CHANG: Hi. That was kind of the lesson of that episode. Can you talk a bit more about being non-binary and how that intersects with other parts of yourself? CHANG: I mean, because I related to a lot of this sort of racism that you were talking about inside queer spaces because I feel it in straight spaces. Her writing has allowed her to visit NYC for Fashion Week events since 2015, and she's worked with clients in almost every field, from dentistry to law and family to entertainment. Black people and especially Black queer people are often positioned as a punch line, and if you're not willing to participate in that, it cuts you off at the knees since those are mostly the parts available. When he is open and willing to discuss things related to queer sex, its because his goal is to make it not-awkward or dirty in some way. I now have two podcasts, one with Starburns Audio called Black Folxabout our lives and how being Black has shaped our identities. And as time went on, I think I, you know, further specified that it's love - you know, people to love themselves and see themselves and know that they are three dimensional, full people and that they're worthy of love even with all their flaws, even with all their mistakes. It just means that that particular joke might not be the one to keep in your set. Its been fun. To me, its about building community. No, in 2020, when everything happened withBlack Lives Matter and George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, I had a bunch of videos that actually went viral and I kind of built this following. I realized I was so steeped in self-hatred for my Blackness, for my queerness, for my body, for me. He wants to bring attention to things that many people might not be aware of, or that they might not feel comfortable discussing. Like CHANG: So you say when you were younger, you never thought you could be as attractive as a white man. I don't know. In terms of the whole Big Mouth universe, I joined Big Mouth in season four. Have they been protected? People were galvanizing in the streets in such a massive way. Goodman got his start as a writer on Big Mouths staff and voices its queer lovebug character Walter, first introduced in Season 5. I say, go to the mat for people, really pull back the curtain. Representation is of the utmost importance to me. So I want to get to hold space for both of those things and both those experiences. I think right now, theres a lot of checking boxes and making sure that the rooms look diverse and inclusive, but its not inclusive if we dont have power to tell our stories, if were not being green lit, if were not being promoted, [and] if were not being funded. Thats more impactful. However, his work would turn into Big Mouth, where he is a voice actor. And I was very grateful that I had these pages in my hands. I want white people and non-Black people to be curious about experiences that are not their own and have a really candid insight into that. Television has not always been an affirming place for Black queer voices, but Brandon Kyle Goodman is changing that one punch line at a time. Just this morning, there was a tweet from the co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party where she called Pete Buttigieg a weak little girl. Do you find reading the news triggering and how do you react? So I was latching on GOODMAN: To this thing of, like, I'm missing something. GOODMAN: That's a really beautiful question. Now you see guys on the red carpet wearing dresses and wearing halter tops and all this stuff. And so both those things get to be true, which is why I say I identify with both pronouns, he and they, because it holds space for how I feel, which is what no one can see, which is this non-binary gender identity, as well as what people do see, which is Black manhood. I get to say that I am non-binary and identify as such and not identify as a man. GOODMAN: Thank you so much. You know, before we met, I was really, like, clear about how much I loved myself.
